Marketing automation

Automate behavior-based messages across every channel

Define what to send, when and on which channel, then let user actions or segment membership start the flow. Anti-spam rules and grace periods keep every user from being over-messaged.

Overview

AppBoost Marketing Automation is the rules and journeys engine for marketing and product teams who want behavior-based messages without manual sends. You define messages, channels and grace periods once, then start them from an SDK trigger point, a REST API call or automatic segment membership, across push, email, SMS and web push.

Key facts

Channels
Push, email, SMS, web push
Trigger methods
SDK fireAutomator(), Automation Journeys, REST API
Anti-spam
Same message never sent twice per day to a user for the same event
Timing control
Grace period in hours, set per message and channel
Tracked events
automator trigger, received, open, conversion
SDK setup time
5-10 minutes for most mobile SDKs

The problem

Lifecycle messages depend on manual sends

Abandoned carts, missed onboarding and lapsed buyers need a message within hours, not at the next campaign meeting. Marketing Automation sends them from rules you define once, and stops when the user acts.

Capabilities

What Marketing Automation includes

  • Message on event

Send behavior-based communication when a user performs an action in your app, over push, web push, email or SMS, using rules created in the dashboard.

  • Multi-step rules

A rule lists each message with its title, channel, content, URL and grace period. Send a push after one hour and an email after 24 hours in the same sequence.

  • Grace periods per channel

Set the delay between messages in hours, and use different delays for different channels so each message arrives at the point where it is most likely to convert.

  • Stops on engagement

When a user taps the call to action in the first message received on any channel, the automation stops sending the same content on the other channels.

  • Built-in anti-spam

The same message is never sent to the same user twice per day for the same event, even if the trigger fires repeatedly, and this applies across channels.

  • Automation Journeys

Users enter and leave a journey automatically when they match a customer segment. Use it for onboarding, first-purchase nudges, purchase rewards and birthday offers.

  • SDK and API triggers

Call fireAutomator() from the AppBoost SDK with a trigger point name and optional personalization data, or start automation from your backend through the REST API.

  • Automation analytics

Follow delivery, open, click-through and conversion results for each automation, with automator events recorded for each user.

How it works

How Marketing Automation works

  1. 1

    Create a customer segment

For journeys, define the user criteria that should start the flow, such as installed for N days with no purchase.

  2. 2

    Create the automation rule

In the dashboard, list each message with its channel, content, destination URL and grace period in hours.

  3. 3

    Choose the trigger point

Fire the rule from the SDK with fireAutomator(), from your backend through the REST API, or let segment membership start a journey.

  4. 4

    Add personalization

Pass key-value data with the trigger so messages carry the cart, product or offer details for that user.

  5. 5

    Monitor and refine

Review delivery, open, click-through and conversion for each automation, then adjust content and grace periods.

Who it is for

Who uses Marketing Automation

For marketing managers

Build lifecycle programs once and let them run, while the anti-spam and stop-on-click rules protect the customer experience.

  • Set up abandoned cart and onboarding flows from the dashboard
  • Mix channels with a different delay for each
  • No duplicate messages to the same user in a day
  • See conversion results per automation

For product managers

Connect in-app moments to messages with a single SDK call, and keep server-side logic in your own backend when you need it.

  • One fireAutomator() call per trigger point
  • Supported in the Android, iOS, Flutter and web SDKs
  • REST API for backend-driven automation
  • Journey entry based on segments, not code

Use cases

Marketing Automation use cases

  • 01

    Abandoned cart reminder

Fire a trigger point when a cart is left, send a push after one hour and an email after 24 hours, and stop if the user opens the cart.

  • 02

    Customer onboarding

Send welcome messages over push, email and SMS with 2, 24 and 48 hour gaps to teach new users the key features.

  • 03

    First purchase motivation

Target users who installed the app N days ago and have not purchased, and nudge them toward the first order.

  • 04

    Birthday offer

Send an automated discount code to customers on their birthday through a journey.

Frequently asked questions

Marketing Automation FAQ

What is the difference between event-based automation and Automation Journeys?
Event-based automation starts when a specific action fires a trigger point, such as adding to a cart. Automation Journeys start automatically when a user matches a segment, such as a new user with no purchase after N days. Both use the same rules and channels.
Which channels can automation use?
Automation sends over app push notifications, web push notifications, email and SMS. A single rule can combine several channels, each with its own message content and grace period between messages.
How does AppBoost avoid over-messaging users?
It never sends the same message to the same user twice per day for the same event, even if the trigger repeats. It also stops sending the same content on other channels once the user taps the call to action in the first message.
What does it take to trigger automation from my app?
Install the AppBoost SDK, which takes 5-10 minutes for most mobile platforms, then call fireAutomator() with the trigger point name and optional personalization data. Backend systems can start automation through the REST API instead.
How does it fit with Audiences and Omni-channel Messaging?
Audiences supplies the segments that start journeys, and Omni-channel Messaging shares the same channels. Use Omni-channel Messaging for planned campaigns and Marketing Automation for messages that respond to individual behavior.
What can I measure?
You can track delivery rates, open rates, click-through rates and conversion for each automation. The events automator trigger, automator received, automator open and automator conversion are also recorded on the user profile.
