Overview

AppBoost Mobile App Push Notifications is a channel for marketing and product teams to message Android and iOS app users through the AppBoost SDK. It supports text, video, YouTube, GIF, HTML, WebView and silent pushes, personalization variables, templates and multi-language content, and each notification can open a URL, Smart Link, Micro Page or in-app deep link.

Key facts

Platforms
Android and iOS through the Appgain SDK, plus Flutter
Push types
Text, video, YouTube, GIF, HTML, WebView and silent
Personalization
Variables written as $varname
Android credentials
Sender ID and Google Server API key
iOS credentials
Bundle ID and two .p12 files (development and production), no password

The problem

A plain notification is easy to ignore

Text-only alerts look the same as every other app on the lock screen. Without richer formats and a link to the right destination, pushes get dismissed and do not lead the user back into a journey.

Capabilities

What Mobile App Push Notifications includes

  • Seven push formats

Send text, video, YouTube, GIF, HTML, WebView and silent notifications from the same campaign tool. Video pushes support landscape or portrait mp4 and a call-to-action button.

  • GIFs from Tenor

Upload your own GIF or search the Tenor library for one that matches the campaign, then attach it to the push.

  • HTML and WebView pushes

Display interactive HTML, or a preview of a web page, outside the app and even on the phone lock screen.

  • Silent background pushes

Send a push that manages your app remotely with no user action, for example to update app data in the background.

  • Call-to-action destinations

Send users to any URL, a Smart Link, a Micro Page or an app deep link chosen from the list stored in Appgain.

  • Templates and variables

Reuse notification text templates and personalize each message with variables written as $varname, so each user sees relevant content.

  • Language, sound and emoji

Send text and title in several languages that follow device language, add emoji, and use a custom sound that is bundled in your app.

  • Opt-in control and growth

Users can opt in or out of specific notification channels through the SDK. The Campaign Summary page charts push token growth over time.

How it works

How Mobile App Push Notifications works

  1. 1

    Integrate the Appgain SDK

Add the SDK to your Android, iOS or Flutter app so devices register for push and their subscriptions are stored in Appgain.

  2. 2

    Add Android credentials

Copy the Sender ID and Legacy server key from Firebase Cloud Messaging and enter them under Project Settings, Communication Channels. JSON file configuration is not supported.

  3. 3

    Add iOS credentials

Create sandbox and production .p12 push certificates with no password. Enter your Bundle ID and upload both files in the iOS Push tab.

  4. 4

    Compose and target

Choose the push type, write the title and message, set a call-to-action destination and select the audience you want to reach.

  5. 5

    Review campaign results

Use the Campaign Summary page and Push Notification Subscribers section to follow subscriber growth and campaign performance.

Frequently asked questions

Mobile App Push Notifications FAQ

What push types does AppBoost support?
AppBoost supports text, video, YouTube, GIF, HTML, WebView and silent pushes. Video, GIF, HTML and WebView pushes are grouped as rich push. Text pushes carry a title, optional custom sound and image, and silent pushes update the app in the background.
What do I need to send push to Android and iOS?
You need the Appgain SDK integrated in your app and push subscriptions stored in Appgain. Android needs a Sender ID and Google Server API key. iOS needs a Bundle ID and sandbox and production .p12 files without a password.
Does the Android setup accept a Firebase JSON file?
No. The Android guide states Appgain does not support JSON file configuration. You copy the Sender ID and Legacy server key from the Cloud Messaging tab in Firebase, and enter them in Project Settings under Communication Channels.
Which SDKs support push?
The docs describe push support in the Android, iOS and Flutter SDKs. For rich push on iOS, follow the rich notification setup in the iOS SDK guide, which uses an additional rich notification library alongside the main SDK.
Where can a push send the user?
A push can open any URL, a Smart Link, a Micro Page, or an app deep link selected from the list stored in the Appgain backend. Choose the destination per campaign so users land where the message promised.
How does app push relate to other AppBoost channels?
App push is part of Omni-channels next to web push, SMS, email and WhatsApp. Marketing automation can send app push in a behavior-based flow, and Smart Deep Links and Micro Pages provide the destinations.
